Kiko's General Store

The store that's never big enough — and the birthplace of a notebook full of everything it isn't.

Kiko's General Store rearranges its front window three times a week, which is two times more than anyone asked for. Monday it's imported tin whistles nobody plays; Wednesday it's a pyramid of jam priced a single penny under Marta's; Friday it's whatever Cori last hauled off the star-train, marked up by mood. The shelves reach the ceiling, and the ceiling is still, in Kiko's opinion, a personal insult — the place is packed to bursting, yet its owner spends every waking hour measuring the gap between what's on the shelf and what could be. That gap has an address: a dog-eared notebook labeled THE VACANCIES, born right here at the counter one slow afternoon when Kiko ran out of room and started writing down the room he didn't have. Old Ben leans in the doorway most mornings, says nothing, buys one thing, and that's the whole partnership.
