The Docks

Where the tide comes in twice a day and the gossip never goes out.

The Docks are Old Ben's kingdom, though he'd never call it that — "I just happen to own the good chair," he says, meaning the salt-bleached one at the end of the pier where he mends nets and files away every word the town lets slip. Smoke from his fish stall drifts low over the planks all morning, sweet and stubborn, and by noon it has soaked into everyone who leaned on the railing to ask him something. Nobody comes to The Docks only for fish. They come because whatever happened in town last night has already washed up here by dawn, sorted and salted, waiting.

Watch the water long enough and the whole cast drifts through: Pia comes down before her farm chores to sit at Ben's elbow and be told, in his slow way, the one thing she actually needed to hear. Wren wanders over when the herons look off, and the two of them can pass an hour saying nothing at all. Cori's ship noses in on no schedule but its own, unloading crates that smell of somewhere else — and, if you're June and you buy her a coffee, the headline from beyond the bay. Come at low tide: the water pulls back, the stall goes quiet, and Old Ben will tell you the town is exactly like the harbor mud — everything sinks into it eventually, and everything, if you wait, comes back up.
