The Unbuilt Bridge

At the low end of Main Street, where the road runs out and the water begins, stands the town's oldest promise: a bridge that has never once been built. There's a jar on Kiko's counter, a slot in Marta's till, a tin can nailed to Otto's doorframe - all of it feeding the same fund, all of it accounted for in a ledger Old Ben keeps and refuses to add up out loud. On the public board by the well, under the seed prices and the lost-goat notices, the same three words come back every season in a different hand: WHEN'S THE BRIDGE? Nobody signs it. Everybody's written it once.

Fig has measured the crossing so many times he no longer brings his tape; he just stands there, jaw working, and walks home.
