The Harvest Festival

One day a year, Marta and Kiko share a table instead of a war — and June sharpens two pencils.

THE HARVEST FESTIVAL: WHEN THE WHOLE TOWN OWES SOMEBODY A FAVOR

Every autumn the square fills with stalls before the mist has lifted off the bay, and Old Ben — who claims he only came for the weather — parks himself where he can see everyone and be seen by nobody. This is the one day the town council makes Marta and Kiko run a joint booth: "buy a loaf, get the jam at cost," a truce negotiated with all the warmth of two cats sharing a windowsill. They do not speak. They sell out by noon. Nib's water pump, hauled in for the crowd, plays its seventh-bucket tune whether anyone wants it or not, and Fig has already checked the beam of the festival stage twice — for safety, he'll tell you, though there's a fresh fig leaf carved up there he'll tell no one about.

Otto rents out the stools nearest his counter to whoever wants to watch the Marta-Kiko cold war thaw and refreeze in real time, and by the time the lanterns go up, June has filled one notebook and started a second. Watch the far edge for Cori's stall — foreign spices, off-world gossip, and the annual promise that this is "the last harvest I'll ever trade here" — and watch for Pia, who works the fields straight through the festivities so the harvest everyone's toasting actually exists. If someone hands her a plate of Marta's bread that nobody seems to have paid for, don't ask. Wren's tent is at the back, quieter, where the animals who've had enough of the crowd go to be told the truth.
