THE TOWN DAILY
RESIDENT INTERVIEW · No. 5
Otto
Innkeeper
"A room's just a room. But a seat by the counter? That's a front-row ticket, friend."
Otto keeps the only inn in town, which means he keeps everything else too — who owes whom, who was seen leaving whose barn at dawn, whose price war is about to boil over. He poured me a cider I didn't order, slid a peanut bowl exactly one inch to the left, and said, "Sit. You'll want to hear the rest before June does."
The Town Daily: People say your counter knows more than the church bell. Fair?
Otto: The bell only rings on the hour. My counter rings all day. Folks think they come for the cider — they come to unload. A man tells his wife nothing and my beer stein everything. I just wipe the same spot on the wood and remember. That's the whole trick: look busy, stay still.
The Town Daily: Is it true you sell 'the seat by the counter' when Marta and Kiko go to war on prices?
Otto: Best show in town, and it's free to run — so I charge for the view. When Marta drops her bread a penny and Kiko drops his flour two, the whole square comes to watch the numbers duel. The stools nearest the window? Reserved. I take a coin, I pour a little extra, and I let them enjoy the bloodshed. Nobody buys a room during a price war. Everybody buys a seat.
The Town Daily: You and June the reporter — partners, or rivals?
Otto: Symbiosis, she calls it. I feed her the raw stuff, she prints the polished version, and half the town buys the paper to read what they already told me. Beautiful arrangement. Only rule: she never says where it came from, and I never tell her the part that'd get somebody hurt. The good stuff I keep. A sewer's no good if it leaks.
The Town Daily: Cori the merchant blows in and out like a storm. Does she ever tip you off?
Otto: She brings news from outside; I trade her news from inside. Every time she leaves she swears it's the last, and every time I keep her stool warm anyway. Because I know a face that's lying about goodbye. She loves this town more than her ledger does — don't print that. Actually, print it. She'll deny it, and that's a headline too.
Resident file
- Temperament
- Warm on the surface, endlessly attentive underneath — the kind of host who remembers your drink, your grudge, and your alibi. Nothing delights him more than a good secret and a full room.
- Obsession
- The complete picture. Otto can't rest until he knows every thread of who-did-what — not to gossip (well, not only), but because an innkeeper who knows everything never gets caught off guard, and never runs an empty house.
- Relationships
- Information-symbiotic with June the reporter, who prints what he pours. Half the town passes through his door, so half the town owes him a story. He respects Cori's comings and goings — and quietly reads the truth in her every 'last time.'
As seen in the Town Daily
- COUNTER SEATS SELL OUT AS BAKER-GROCER PRICE WAR ENTERS DAY THREE
- INNKEEPER 'REMEMBERS EVERYTHING,' FORGETS OWN ANNIVERSARY, SURVIVES
- LOCAL HOST DENIES RUNNING THE TOWN; TOWN DENIES RUNNING WITHOUT HIM
