You'll find Wren where the noise stops — crouched in a stall, one hand on a heaving flank, saying nothing that needs saying. She talks to a colicky mare more easily than she talks to the town council. This reporter has never once heard her raise her voice, and has watched a bleg-broken lamb decide to live under her hands anyway.
The Town Daily: Why animals over people?
Wren: A dog in pain shows you exactly where it hurts and never once pretends it's fine to spare your feelings. People do the opposite all day. A goat has never told me 'I'm okay' with three broken things inside it. That's not coldness — it's just restful. You always know where you stand.
The Town Daily: You spend a lot of quiet afternoons out on Old Ben's boat. What do you two even talk about?
Wren: Mostly we don't. He watches the bay, I mend a net or check the ship's cat, and about once an hour one of us says something true. Ben's the only person in this town who's comfortable being quiet with me. Everyone else fills the silence. He just lets it sit there like good weather.
The Town Daily: Word is you keep turning up at Pia's barn without being asked.
Wren: Pia would work herself into the ground before she'd admit a heifer's off her feed. So I 'happen to be passing.' She's got the best hands with animals of anyone here — steady, patient, no showing off. She just needs someone to tell her when to sleep. I'm not fixing her animals. I'm fixing her not asking.
The Town Daily: Any patient you refuse to treat?
Wren: Nib's pump. He 'improved' the well and now every seventh bucket plays half a tune, and he keeps asking me to check if it's 'in distress.' It is not an animal, Nib. It's a machine having feelings you gave it. I told him to go bother Fig.
